GERMAN CARDINAL IS NEW POPE
"Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany, a longtime guardian of doctrinal orthodoxy, was elected the new pope Tuesday evening in the first conclave of the new millennium. He chose the name Pope Benedict XVI.
Ratzinger, the first German pope in centuries, served John Paul II since 1981 as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. In that position, he has disciplined church dissidents and upheld church policy against attempts by liberals for reforms. He turned 78 on Saturday."
I am trying to research this guy and figure out what his deal is.... I was pulling for the guy from africa I think that would have been revolutionary!

Wow, they didn't waste any time with that one, did they? That was fast!
I'm not catholic, and don't follow much of what goes on in the church, but I do think this whole process is interesting.

It took the same amount of time and the same vote count (two days and four voting rounds) to elect Benedict XVI that it did for Pope John Paul II, (the previous one).
I received the Popes blessing when he blessed all those watching. Who knew channel 5 could be handy for a papal blessing?

I am just curious to see in what direction this pope is leaning, is he going more orthodox? I am especially curious on what his views are with all the scientific stuff John Paul II skirted in the past few years...

You got a blessing? I'm jealous!
Just out of curiosity, how do they decide which Pope is going to be John Paul II or Benedict XVI, or Paul IV, I mean why'd they pick Benedict the XVI, and not John Paul the III? Do you know what I'm saying?

You came to the right place my child. My knowledge of this knows no bounds....not really but I did go to catholic school so I guess that'll do.
The elected pope himself gets to pick his papal name. It's like a monarchy in that sense. Like if Prince Charles ever becomes King, he could rechristian himself as George the V or Insert shiny new anglo/saxon name here the I. When people are baptized Catholic, you get to pick your "Saint" name, which is your blessed name. So instead of being referred to as Lise, my saint name to my teachers and our parish father was Margaret Ann(shut up, webmistress). Does that make sense?

Yeah, that makes sense. Looks like I did come to the right place to ask that question!
So, if for some strange reason you ever became a nun or something, would you be Sister Margaret Ann?
