I'm just wondering, are you curious to show a correlation between mental illness and drug/alcohol dependancy? I think this is a which came first type of situation. Are people who are mentally defective treating symptoms of their disease by self medicating or is the alcohol/drugs causing a part of the psychosis and once the chemical dependancy becomes a non issue will the person then suffer from less depression/mania/OCD, etc.
I believe that aside from having a "chemical dependency", that people can have an addictive personality causing them to over indulge in too much of anything. If it's not drugs, it's sex, gambling, food, cleaning, etc. That to me is a mental illness and needs to be treated as such. It goes WAY beyond simply detoxing your body of the offending substance. Therapy and medication in certain instances are needed to help that persons brain neurons to fire in a more appropriate(read:healthy) manner.
Just my two cents. And I voted yes to the diagnosis question. My first diagnosis came at eleven and I still go to therapy and am on medications off and on. I used to feel like that diagnosis created a stigma in my mind and that I had a certain "crazyness" expected of me or to live "up" to. I now know that I simply am who I am and that there are parts of my brains wiring that misfires or doesn't connect. It really has nothing to do with self pity for Uncle Perv touching me when I was seven or my Mom not holding me enough. I cannot help how my neurosis is shaped by my brain, but I can recognize it now and take the correct action to ensure that I don't take further steps towards hurting myself or those that I love.

I don't think its possible for someone to have too much sex, or clean too much. One can never have too much of either of those. Ok, its me... I'm talking about me. but still.... I have had a couple different letters after my name... as it stands today the professionals in my life know that if I wanted to take the time and money to be formally evaluated I'd probably come out with AS which would cover all past stuff. But, since having the dx would change nothing, no one sees the reason to do it.

I have been diagnosed a kazillion things over the years, thir s only one I agree with. And for that DX i take meds. Admittedly I am not a wonderful med taker I will go a few weeks on then say hmm I wanna feel "normal" (to me manic is normal) so then I will go off for awhile until I or others get sick of me being off them then I go back on. Tis a bipolars life. Anyway so yeah I definately think that my drug use was self medicating underlying problems and yada yada yada...
PS I am NOT encouraging anyone to take themselves off and on thier meds like I do it probablly reaks havoc on my bo=dy mind and relationships, but I just can not be a walking zombie all the time, and that is how I feel on any medication I have been on.

I don't have problems, just situations that affect me differently than others. ; )
see, I'm normal and deal with things the way they are supposed to be dealt with.
