So, I got into guitar, by accident. My daughter expressed an interest in learning to play, so I went to Milano Music and bought her a little Fender "Starter" guitar pack and signed her up for lessons. I had no interest in music, myself.
After her first lesson, we got books and stuff. She was having a tough time knowing how to practice, so I picked up her guitar and started showing her (I can read music from piano lessons) and for the first time in my life guitar actually looked easy and fun.
Long story short, I couldn't put her guitar down, and I figured I needed to get one myself to "help" her. haha.
So, after trying the cheap piece of crap they have at Target (which isn't all that bad, actually), I went back to Milano and got a sweet dean acoustic.
And then a few weeks later I saw something else, that appeared to be a deal I couldn't pass up. I'm still glad I got it. I love it.
So, I'm taking lessons now, and things are "clicking" for me that never did before, music-wise. When I'm at work I wish I was at home playing my guitar. When I went to San Diego a couple of weeks ago I missed my guitars so much, I considered getting a travel one. I'm annoying people around me (especially my daughter) to death talking about guitar music, guitars I've seen, building guitars, amps, etc.----
so, now I'm a geek, about yet another thing....

Jealous. Maybe we should rock out cause I write songs.
Haha, how "edgy" would we be? Two moms, one a l33t geek and one a physics dork. Oh my, the rockin' out we could do...

Loving your story, ID! ROCK ON! You are not a "geek" IMHO Do you have any carpal tunnel probs? If I knew that it actually helps to play, then I would....

Hey, thanks for the note, MzD. I tried to reply to this a few times before, then I got buried in work etc and my notes got abandoned. Sorry for the delay in responding. I don't know if it would help or hurt carpal tunnel, but I think that the stresses on the hand are very different than those associated with carpal tunnel. I don't think it would hurt it at all, but I'm not an expert. I'm really sorry to hear you suffer from that. Myself, I have a little carpal tunnel stress (undiagnosed, but I get the pain), but mostly I have cubital tunnel problems, from resting my elbows on desks etc--my ring and pinkie fingers tend to go numb. The carpal, well, when playing guitar, you bend your wrists down (curling toward the "inner" arm), instead of "up", which is how I typically give my hands pain while typing. It's actually a relief, for me, to play guitar, but that's me. The book that got me so excited about this is this one: www.amazon.com/Modern-Guitar-Method-Grade-Expanded/dp/0786606495If you have experience reading music or playing piano, it kind of interlocks the guitar with that. If not, it's still really good for an introduction to music reading and how the notes on the clefs match to the fret/string positions.

I want that book. Now.
Oh, I guess it's been a couple: IDBUG inspired me to pick up my sons guitar. I did and now I love it, too. I have a friend that will start coming over on Wednesdays to help me and I'm really excited about it. My left side fingertips hurt and are getting rough but I love it.
We should totally rock out.

Kata would make Nikki Sixx look like Clay Aiken.

That is awesome that all of you guys are interested. This would be so much cooler than a knitting circle. :-)
I'm learning some cool stuff from my teacher, and I'm always willing to share, too. We should definitely rock out.

Do eet! So I had my first formal lesson... He made me clean, polish and then restring my guitar. He showed me how to do one string and then made me do the rest. I told him that if I knew he was going to make me paint the fence before he taught me how to do the crane, then I wouldn't have come. But it was neat learning some technical stuff. Also, now I know some power chords...Nirvana and Social Distortion songs here I come!

That's awesome WD! Where are you taking lessons?
And yes, restringing is a pain in the @ss, especially on an acoustic.
