Okay, I'm loving this! Hope the movie is as good as the book. One of my favorite things to do is compare the two.

Me too!
Unfortunately, more often than not I am a little disappointed in a movie when I've read the book, but not always. There have been some great ones.
OK, let's do that. What movies+books has everyone read? What did you think about the movie vs. the book?

I saw this yesterday. It was great!
It wasn't exactly like the book, pretty much had the basics down, but there was a lot of adaptation and rearranging. They are different enough that seeing the movie doesn't ruin the book. I'm not sure about the other way around, I've heard some people complaining that the movie sucked if you've read the book. But, I thought they did a very nice job.
Has anyone else seen it/read it?

I've never read the book but want to see the movie...on DVD. I'm just not a huge Claire Danes fan.
Best book to movie? Misery by Stephen King.
Movie that was better than the book? The Shining by Stanley Kubrick
Book that's better than the movie? Pretty much every Goddamn one. I Am Legend is the most recent example. Fuck Will Smith.

Yeah. Most books are waaaay better than the movies they spawn. There's just no way to accurately adapt any book to the screen. And, there's really no way to top the movie in the reader's own head, at least not to the reader. Well, not to me, anyway. Yeah, I thought Misery was really well done. And I love the first Shining movie. Still one of my favorites. I recently bought the DVD so I could watch it with my daughter (bad mom ). The book was great, but different enough to be its own thing.

Funny you should mention The Shining. I just submitted my review of that for a website that I've started writing for. It was horrible writing that thing only because it's one of my favorite movies, by my favorite director, with the story written by one of my favorite authors. HARD. I cried and then threw up when I finally finished. It took me three weeks and I was two weeks past deadline. I think it was hard because it was only my second review for them and the first one was well received so I think that freaked me out too.
DAMN! Someone needed to vent...

I got it because I asked. I've been writing a series that has to do with vampires and I was thinking about submitting to a small (think microscopic) literary magazine for short stories. However, I have no bio. Then I remembered that this guy that I'm marginally acquainted with started this new website so I approached him at one of his shows (he's a musician) and asked. He was happy to have a woman on board because, "it'll give us some credibility, like we're not just a couple of weirdos sitting around Moms basement doing reviews." I wrote a book review on 'I Am Legend', they accepted it and now here I sit with a bi-monthly featured article called 'A look back at..."(I'll mostly do reviews of classic films, while the creators do the first runs) and I'm getting ready to finish my latest book review.
I, in no way, write scholarly thoughtful articles. I start sentences with prepositions and I sentence fragment like a motherfucker. But I don't write for English professors or Jane Austen fans. It's mostly just me gushing over things that I love; horror, books and film.

That sounds fantastic WD. I'd love to read your articles too, if you're willing to PM me the site. I love horror books too. That and SFF pretty much dominate my fiction reading. I'd love to read your opinions, WD. Right now I'm reading a really scary one by Peter Straub (who is one o the best, IMHO, and so far it's one of his best books). It's called lost boy lost girl. Yesterday I was sure I was going to have some serious nightmares after reading it. It has some of the elements of my own worst, scariest nightmares throughout. And it's an interesting story. It's AWESOME.

I love that guy. He co-authored two of my favorite books (anything I read becomes my favorite. Unless it's Tom Clancy or something. Fuck that guy). Anyway, Peter Straub. He co-authored The Talisman and its follow up Black House and I absofuckinlutely love that story. I think he wrote something called The Throat, too?
Anyway, I'll pm a link to ya.

I'd love to read it. I loved this part of your Shining review (hope you don't mind if I paste it here):
Sorry it took me so long to be able to post again--been busy at work, at home, everywhere all the time.

I don't mind you quoting it at all! I would just rather not have certain people knowing the name of where I write.
Oh and I just got asked today to start doing music reviews for another site based off of my last article, that book review that I wrote. Pretty cool, feels neat but I'm anxious about it.
