just a rant.
I've been trying to train two people on tasks I've been doing, so they can start to do similar things. BOTH of these people are difficult to get in touch with, they're never available, always working at home or going off and doing whatever (and I thought I was bad), but one in particular is just plain unreachable.
Now I find out this person is in charge of training the newest member of our team on the same stuff that she's absolutely clueless about, because she keeps blowing me the $*(%@ off! WTF? God I am so frustrated.
How the hell am I supposed to be able to make sure anyone has clue #1 if nobody is there to take the information I am trying to give them?

I hear ya. My new assistant is about to become my old assistant. I got her a huge raise and new office--Monday morning will probably bring the following directive: step it up bitch, or you'll get kicked to the curb.
But in some PC office speak, of course.

Thanks GH. Sorry for the delayed response.
Wow, that's a shitty situation. How did it go? Did she step it up?
I got bitchy with this person I'm dealing with over IM (because I couldn't approach her any other way, she was always busy or leaving or something), and then I was finally able to sit down with her and go over the first round of material. Unfortunately, I don't think any of it sank in. I gave her the next step to do (easy) and haven't heard from her since.
I did sit down with my manager, the day I started this thread, and framed my frustration in terms of "I don't think I am very good at this 'driving people' thing." And then she told me she was having the same concerns with the this person, and the reason she had her teach the new guy was so that this person would be forced to try to find the answers herself. I don't think she's seeing much improvement.
The ironic thing, here, is that this person is the very same one who totally intimidated me before. She was so confident and seemed like she could handle all kinds of technical challenges, no problem; but I feel like a dupe now.

I gave her an action plan. She had to sign it. She must meet certain goals by the end of October or its over. I love my job. I love my boss. I hate my current office culture. I'm looking for new employment.
