Well, it was definitely better than the 80s. <shudder> I dunno about that. True, the coat of fecal matter that stagnated on the surface of the eighties was in large part hard to stomach, but there were a lot of really cool things about the eighties underneath all of that. Just consider: New Order. Junior High Dances (if you're my age). David Lynch (pre-Twin Peaks, which is a definite 90's highlight)... No Fox News Network. Several good Chicago Cubs teams (Sutcliffe, Dawson, Maddux, Durham, Sandberg etc), AND Harry Carey. Tom Hanks still doing comedy (The Money Pit, Splash, etc.). An unstoppable catelog of SNL alum flicks that were actually funny, including Caddyshack, the greatest movie of all time. It was the decade that God became angry with the San Francisco Giants for taking the penant away from the Chicago Cubs and in his wrath punished the entire city of San Francisco with a devastating earthquake right at the beginning of the World Series vs. the Oakland A's. (The A's rightfully won the Series). Bigwheels, BMX, G.I. Joe, and Transformers. It's Gary Shandling's Show. Madonna videos. The squiggily scrambled Playboy Channel. Saturday Morning cartoons. $5.00 being an ENORMOUS amount of cash (again, if you're my age). Comic Books going for between 50 and 75 cents. U-Totem (in Phoenix). -Sal

Yay! Sal managed to find some bright spots in a decade I have loathed ever since it happened. Well, it was definitely better than the 80s. <shudder> I dunno about that. True, the coat of fecal matter that stagnated on the surface of the eighties was in large part hard to stomach, but there were a lot of really cool things about the eighties underneath all of that. Just consider: New Order. Oh man, that's a good point. In fact, it's one of the only bands (besides the Violent Femmes) I can stand from that period.... No Fox News Network. Nice... Tom Hanks still doing comedy (The Money Pit, Splash, etc.). An unstoppable catelog of SNL alum flicks that were actually funny, including Caddyshack, the greatest movie of all time. ... It's Gary Shandling's Show. ROFL! I remember that. I was bewildered by it at first, and then hooked.Madonna videos. You mean the ones where she's not trying to be a rapper? Yeah, that's definitely improvement. The squiggily scrambled Playboy Channel. LMAOSaturday Morning cartoons. True, back then there wasn't tons of recycled anime garbage (I know I sound like an old lady saying that, but I'm serious, it's mind-blowingly awful--except the Batman stuff)$5.00 being an ENORMOUS amount of cash (again, if you're my age). Close enough.Comic Books going for between 50 and 75 cents. Unfortunately, I wasn't into comic books, back then. U-Totem (in Phoenix). I remember a U-Totem in Globe. Whatever happened to all the smaller but better chain convenience stores?-Sal

DK
Fresh Fruit and Plastic Surgery are really brilliant albums, good call on DK.
Chili Peppers (when they were good)
RHCP, Freaky Styley, The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, and Mother's Milk were all milestones and complete predecessors to the entire indie scene that was unleased in the 90's. The Chili's were architects, even though those records really weren't all that good, they laid some great groundwork for an entire generation of profound artistry in music.
The Smiths
Without a doubt one of the greatest bands of all time. I love the Smiths.
Black Flag
"Nervous Breakdown". That's all you have to know.
The Cure
The Cure are one of the most inaccurately stigmatized bands in history. They have such an unwarranted "mope" tag that as an unflinching Cure fan I get very frustrated. The Cure's list of great records span through four decades, boasting one of the most ecclectic and diverse catelogs of all time. Not to mention putting out one of the top five album's of the 1980's Disintegration.
The Decendents, then ALL, then TheDecendents again
I like the Decendents. The only complaint I have about them is that they sort of influenced the coming of "pop punk", which I hate.
the Misfits
I love the Misfits while they had Glen, but hate Danzig and all that other crap he did. A notch above the Misfits I would have to say reside The Cramps
Minor Threat
"Filler" is one of my favorite songs all time. Always good stuff, Minor Threat.
Other 80's greats that redeem the decade:
REM (pre- Document) Camper Van Beethoven Siouxsie and the Banshees The Replacements Husker Du The Minutemen PIL Echo and the Bunnymen Elvis Costello Love and Rockets The Meatpuppets and (of course) The Violent Femmes
