I have Cox for internet and phone, and the supposedly "free" local channel TV that came with the internet (what a joke), and I soooo want to get away from them. Cox is the epitome of evil.
I have been thinking lately about signing up for one of the sat services (because Qwest has a deal w/everything for the same $$ I'm paying for internet+phone), and it seems like Dish Network is such a better deal than Direct TV, but I have heard bad stuff about it.
So, does anyone have satellite TV, which one, and has it been good or does it suck too?
thanks, --T

As far as I'm concerned, Qwest is SO much more evil than Cox, but that's just my experience. I HATE them. I have DirecTV for my satelite TV and they're wonderful. I have never had any problems with them. It's really easy to change your programming online if you want to. The only time I have ever had my TV go out is if we get a really bad storm, the longest it's ever been out is maybe an hour. What's nice about satellite is that if the TV goes out, you don't have to have someone come over to re-set it, some people I know with digital cable need to wait for the cable guy to come out to reset things sometimes.

I don't know what you have avaliable in your area, but I believe there is a cable company that lets you pay for channels individually. I think you can do something like pick 10 cable channels that you want for one rate, or this could possibly be some fantasy that my mind has concocted. Although I'm pretty sure my cable company does offer that, it's probably not much help since I live in Michigan.
I don't know if Dish Network is the same thing as One-Time Dish Network, but a few years ago One-Time Dish Network charged six dishes to my debit card (and I hadn't even ordered one since I was living on campus at the time) at a hundred dollars a pop. It took about a week for my bank to sort out the mess (since a few previous bad-check slip-ups ruined my crediblity with them). I'd had that money set aside for funiture for the apartment I was due to move into that same week, and because of those assholes I had to do without funiture in my apartment for a week, I didn't even have a chair to sit on. So, to shorten the long story, I'm now biased against all companies with Dish Network in their title.

HATE IT! I HATE IT! I FUCKING HATE IT! DO NOT, whatever you do, DO NOT get any satellite tv. It fucking sucks monkey ass! The wind blows and we lose channels--for MONTHS. The service guys come and do NOTHING! It's horrid. Absolutely horrid. In another thread I already said that I have so far spent $120 on cable at my condo that I don't even fucking live at yet--just because I wanted to be sure we had access to television. We go THERE to watch important stuff. Because here... you fart and lose the picture. Umm...so to clarify, I don't like it too much

The receiver was slowly going bad, so for months certain channels never came in. As far as storms affecting service, yes, they do. I like Directv though and am glad I have it. I get all my channels now and can even get all the football games in the fall if I want to.

Oh yeah, T, if you do decide to go with DirecTV, you can tell them I referred you...I just saw a commercial saying I could get a credit on my bill if I refer someone. Maybe I'll buy you lunch.

My parents are TV addicts, and they have cox digital cable with all the bells and whistles (but not hd or dvr), and they keep getting tiling problems. You know, when streaming video data runs into a hiccup and a chunk of the screen gets all pixellated? And they pay like $200 a month for all that stuff.
(By the way, do you have to pay a monthly fee for DVR? I thought it was just a device, not a service.)
I pay $82 a month for internet + phone, and that's only because my employer subsidizes the internet part so I can telecommute. If they stop doing that, I have to find another option, because $50/month for internet is just too much to pay, in my opinion.

I know with DirecTV DVR you have to pay $5.99 a month in addition to a $100.00 charge for the receiver. My parents have a lot of problems with their Cox digital cable, too. I know nothing about high speed internet or anything, I still have dial-up at home.
