At my place of employment, the rumors are flying. At every online electronics magazine, and possibly some business magazines (no idea though), the rumors are flying. I heard the first outside rumor today, while at lunch with coworkers, and needless to say it scared the hell out of me.
It seems that several divisions are on the chopping block, including mine. For sale, being dropped, whatever. Scary shit.
After lunch I jumped online and started searching for the articles everyone was talking about, and so far everything I have seen consisted of rumors and speculation based on what the CEO said a few weeks ago.
Anyway, no real point to this, but it's got me really freaked out and distracted, and maybe a little more reactive than I should be with online stuff. I just needed to vent.
Thanks for listening. :-)

That sucks, P.
Our entire IT dept was just laid off. The company signed a 2 year contract with an Indian firm to provide all of our internal needs. We're a global corporation and the 8 guys they had in StL just weren't able to provide IT help in places like Hong Kong and Chilie. So the move actually makes sense.
But now almost EVERY dept is freaking out. Because in reality most of them could be outsourced....scary stuff.

Thanks GH.
Yeah, the outsourcing stuff sucks big time, makes me sick. I also heard that most of our IT is now gone. That scares me too. We definitely need IT people onsite. Not everything can be handled over the phone.
My profession is one that there has been lots of talk about growing outsourcing too. It's not happening very much yet, but I'm sure it will grow.
I called my dad after lunch yesterday (he's an IT guy, and has been in the computer world since the Altair), and he gave me some words of reassurance: I didn't just get a huge raise to be laid off, surely they'd find a place for me. Awww, that was sweet, I'm trying to hold on to that lovely fantasy.
The specific rumor is that my division is for sale to other companies. I think this is based on the fact that the CEO said there is a huge restructuring in the works, and they were going to take a look at all divisions not making money, and ours just started to make money, but still isn't making a profit. Add to that the confirmed fact that they're selling a company they bought a few years ago, and here we go. The extrapolation is that all of these divisions are for sale.

That's some scary stuff, P. THere have been rumors going around my company for a few years about them closing our office and moving it to Greeley, CO of all places...but so far, they're just rumors and nothing has happened, but it's a scary thought.

I started thinking this was all some bizarre dream/nightmare. Apparently it's not, or it's a long and involved one.
It could be worse. We've all had lots and lots of meetings and open forums and discussions today, and the higher-ups are talking like it's an exciting opportunity, and everything's going to be ok or better. (They're also suggesting that our current company/ceo is a dumbass for this move, and logically I have to agree. We were sold for a pretty low price, and the fact that the company is doing this is like cutting off its own toes.) I sure as hell hope so. They say that if we don't get an offer from the new company that is the same or better than the old company, then we'll be offered a chance to transfer elsewhere within the company. We are currently NOT allowed to transfer elsewhere until the offers are out, or not out.
The new company is supposedly looking for office/lab space here in Chandler, for the 400+ of us that will be affected here. Over the entire company, there are about 1400 of us across several sites, including Colorado, Texas, Massachusetts, China, and Israel. And, we're all still going to have the same immediate bosses, and still will be working on the same planned projects, and still will have the same customers, at least one of this is pretty happy (apparently) about the move. So, we'll see.
I am just hoping that everything will work out as people are saying. But, they were saying, just last week, that we probably didn't have anything to worry about with these rumors. haha.
thanks for letting me vent. I'm still freaked, but at the wait and see stage right now (and babbling like an idiot, as you can see).

I hope everything works out for you. If they offered you the oppertunity to transfer, would it still be in the same city? I hope you wouldn't have to move after all the work you put into that beautiful kitchen of yours. But since you just got a raise, I'm sure they consider you a valuable employee.

Those of us who are going to get offers from the new company are supposed to do so within the next 2-4 weeks. Then the deal is supposed to close in the next 4-5 months. The newspaper articles are saying that they're looking for a place in Chandler, or at least the chamber of commerce hopes so.
But most of us are determined to show the old company that they made a really bad mistake, by succeeding with the new company enough to rub the old company's nose in it. ;D
(can ya tell I'm posting from home, and not under the watchful eyes of big brother?)
(can ya tell I'm feeling a little resentful? hehe... going through stages, I suppose)
